Lock Your Doors

Once again I’m showing my age. I remember a time when we never locked our doors. Not for our houses or for our cars. Would we dare do that today?

But when I was a kid I remember many times leaving the house to even go out of town and never locking the door. I remember jumping out of the car when we got back home from our trips and going straight into the house. Never was the door locked.  And I never was worried or afraid.  Of course, I was just a kid.  But my parents never worried either.  I think the only time the door got locked was when a convict would escape from the Cummins Prison farm.  And the radio would say “Lock your door” and report to the police if you saw a stranger in the neighborhood.

And we only locked our cars when we would go shopping for Christmas and were out of town.  Nowadays I always lock my doors…Always.  I guess in the good ole days we trusted our neighbors more than we do today.  Were we just stupid back in the day?  Or have our neighbors become more untrustworthy?  Can you ever imagine a time when once again we could leave our homes and cars “Unlocked” and not end up robbed of everything that was not nailed down?  I think there were more poor people back then but few people would even consider taking your stuff.  Times certainly have changed.  Some for the better.  Some obviously not.
