A taste of mid Summer heat has settled in across the area. Let’s keep our pets safe. We would add to this story, by saying if you have animals who reside outside, make sure they have access to plenty of clean water and shelter or shade from the heat. Let’s take good care of our furry friends!!
Here is a timely reminder from the Texarkana Texas Police Department:
It’s going to be unseasonably hot in Texarkana for the next several days – with temperature highs expected to be in the mid-90’s later this week. Most people know that you can’t leave a pet in a hot car. It’s just not safe for them. Temperatures can shoot up in minutes, putting your dog at risk of heat stroke. The inside of a vehicle parked in 70 degree weather can reach over 100 degree in just 20 minutes. And, contrary to popular belief, leaving the windows cracked doesn’t make it safe. A parked car with the windows cracked heats up at almost exactly the same rate as a car with the windows all rolled up.
In Texarkana, it’s illegal to leave your pet inside a car unattended for more than five minutes if the ambient outside temperature is 80 degrees or more.
What should you do if you see an animal inside a parked car like this on a hot day? If they appear to be in some type of distress, call 911 and we will send someone right out. While your waiting on us to get there, you might try to locate the owner (maybe have them paged inside the business). Something drastic, like breaking out the car window, should only be done in the most extreme situations where you believe the animal might die if you don’t do something now. In 99.99 percent of the cases, the best thing to do is to let us get there and handle it.
