Retire Old Glory Ceremony

January 13 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The VFW Post #4562 and Cub Scout Pack & Troop 19 are organizing a Flag Retirement Ceremony on January 13th at 1:00 pm. The event will take place at 4700 E 9th Street, Texarkana, AR. The purpose of the ceremony is to dispose of unserviceable American flags in a dignified and respectful manner, following the guidelines set out for such occasions.
Retiring our flag properly is a sign of respect and honor for the symbol it represents. Leaving it tattered or in a state of disrepair goes against the principles of patriotism and reverence for our nation.

To retire the flag properly, follow these steps:
1. Inspect the flag: Check for any signs of damage, such as tears, fraying, or fading. If the flag is beyond repair, it should be retired.
2. Choose a retirement method: There are several accepted methods for retiring a flag, including burning, burying, or donating it to a flag retirement ceremony. Burning is the most common method, but ensure you do so in a safe and respectful manner.
3. Prepare for retirement: Find a suitable location for the retirement ceremony, preferably in a controlled environment like a fire pit or a designated area. Make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
4. Conduct the retirement ceremony: Begin by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the national anthem to honor the flag. Then, carefully place the flag on the fire, ensuring it is completely consumed. While the flag burns, maintain a respectful silence or recite a patriotic poem or prayer.
5. Dispose of the ashes: Once the flag has been completely burned, collect the ashes and bury them in a dignified manner. Alternatively, you can contact local veterans’ organizations or scouting groups to inquire about flag retirement ceremonies they may conduct.
Remember, retiring the flag properly is a solemn act that demonstrates our commitment to the values and ideals it represents. doing so, we show our gratitude to those who have fought and sacrificed for our country.
