We found some great “Do It Yourself” videos to help you keep your furry friend warm outside during this winter’s extreme cold. As you work on your pet’s shelter, there are some basic principles.
1- Shelter (Dog or Cat House)
Keep the space small and cozy. Large spaces are necessary for the summer for ventilation, but during the winter, the opposite is true as you are trying to keep the heat inside.
2- Dog/Cat House Door
If the “House” doesn’t have a door, get creative with some cardboard and create a “flap,” as this will keep the inside a few degrees warmer. Also, Make sure the door is facing away from the wind.
3- Insulate
Straw is a great source of insulation, and easy to change out, do not use hay. Check the straw daily and ensure it is high and lofty, allowing your pet to snuggle down into the straw but still have a layer keeping them up off the ground. Try to avoid blankets as they can get wet and then freeze.
4- Food & Water
Ensure your pet has plenty of food and water. Our pets need to keep their strength up as they snuggle down from the extreme weather. Keep your pet’s water free from ice.
