Red River Credit Union urges us to be careful when accepting calls and talking to representatives we don’t know as you could be a victim of a Debit Card Scam. Don’t ever provide your PIN (Personal Identification Number) to anyone over the phone. We all work hard for our money; don’t let a freeloader decimate your bank account. In this case, it is not impolite to hang up the phone and contact your financial institution to verify the information.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS DEBIT CARD SCAM AND KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE A MEMBER WE WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR PIN NUMBER.
***THIS IS NOT RELATED DIRECTLY TO RRCU. WE ARE SHARING THE INFORMATION OF A SCAM THAT IS GOING AROUND NATIONWIDE.***
The current scam in circulation is: you receive a call, the caller ID is your financial institution’s phone number. They say they are from the fraud dept., calling about your debit card ending in – – – – (the 4 correct numbers), and ask if you’ve been traveling. They then report 2 suspicious charges that happened at out-of-state stores (Lowe’s and Walmart). When you reply to them that you did not authorize those transactions, they tell you they will send a new card. They know your address, both of your phone numbers, send a verification code to your cell phone, and ask for you to read it to them. THEN THEY ASK FOR YOUR PIN NUMBER, so they can deactivate it.
When they find you are suspicious, they will make an effort to comfort you by telling you to look at the caller ID. ALWAYS, hang up and call your financial institution to confirm for yourself. A financial institution WILL NOT ASK FOR YOUR PIN NUMBER. STAY ALERT!
