Oatmeal Versus Grits

Out of all the questions to haunt mankind throughout the ages…are the proper choice of warm grain based breakfast cereal. The two contenders, oatmeal and grits.

Oatmeal, the favorite of Wilford Brimley, if ye olde telley is to be believed, offers a staple that can be enjoyed by both human and horse-kind.  You can do all kinds of things with it.  From just straight as it is, unadorned, to honey or syrup added, to fruit, usually dried, of a wide assortment, you can gussy up your oatmeal for a wide frequency of flavors to accompany that warm, steamy goodness.

Grits, ground up wheat, also commonly accompanies meals, both as a main meal and as a side dish. Warmed up and creamy, bit of butter, a bit of milk, a bit of syrup, you have yourself some fine eating, alongside your eggs, omlette and what not or in a big, steaming heaping bowl all alone. But the elixir that gets me going, that has me salivating, is the version served all mixed in with melted cheddar. Cheese grits, baby, that is the meal of the GAWDS.  Throw some shrimp in there, sprinkle on some Texas Pete, and you have a meal that frankly is almost too good to be served without entrance to Heaven first.

So, what will it be? Oatmeal or grits?

Or shall we complicate things with porridge?
